Information and Acknowledgment

The City’s Public Works Department tries to keep the City looking its best at all times. The Department takes care of the City streets and park areas works for you in several ways:
  • The City’s right-of-ways are maintained by grass cutting and clearing of excess undergrowth to help with visibility and safety.
  • Ditches and culverts are cleared of debris to help maintain the drainage system.
  • Streets are routinely inspected for potholes and damage.
  • The park areas and ball fields are cleared of litter and debris and mowed as often as possible to try and sustain an attractive appearance.
  • All regulatory, warning, and street signs along the right-of-way within the City limits are the responsibility of the City.

Working together as a community, we can keep Hokes Bluff beautiful. If you see a traffic sign that is down or damaged, please report it to City Hall at 492-2414. Also, please report theft or destruction of street signs to the Police Department.

Trash, Garbage, and Limb Pickup Policies

1

Meridian Waste provides sanitation pickup service once per week. Carts should be placed at the street the night before scheduled pick up with the cart’s wheels and lid hinges facing away from the street. The carts should be removed from the roadway by 7:00 am the day after pick up.
2

Please bag all trash/garbage since loose waste may fall out of the cart and/or truck and litter the ground. Cardboard, Styrofoam, loose packing materials and yard debris should not be placed in the cart because it will not compress in the truck.
3

The charge for sanitation service is $25/month and is billed quarterly ($75/quarter). Billing for the first quarter (January-March) is mailed out the first week of January and is due by January 31. Billing for the second quarter (April-June) is mailed out the first week in April and is due by April 30. Billing for the third quarter is mailed out the first week of October and is due by October 31. A late fee of $4.50 applies to bills paid after the due date. If carts are picked up due to non-payment of the bill, a $45 re-establishment fee will apply in addition to the past due balance for the cart to be returned. Failure to receive a bill does not relieve obligation. Your payment options are: mail, drive thru, drop box or pay online at cityofhokesbluff.com.
4

Problems with pickup service (such as missed pickups) or problems with the cart (such as a broken wheel or lid) should be reported to City Hall at (256) 492-2414, extension 109. I acknowledge that I am responsible for paying for sanitation services and am required to keep the Hokes Bluff Sanitation Department advised of my correct address and telephone number at all times. If I should discontinue my service it is my responsibility to advise Hokes Bluff Sanitation Department of the date for the service to cease and the cart to be picked up, to pay any outstanding balance due, and to provide a forwarding address.

The city trash pick-up is on Wednesday. Please place the cart at curbside on the night before to ensure pickup of trash/garbage.

LIMB & YARD DEBRIS PICKUP On the first and third working Monday of each month, weather permitting, the City will pick up small limbs, shrubbery trimmings, bagged grass clippings and leaves.

Occasionally, the pickup needs to be rescheduled. Citizens must call City Hall the Friday before the scheduled pickup date at 256-492-2414 to have their name and address added to the list maintained for each month’s pickup. All items must be placed on the street right-of-way.

The City will pick up the equivalent of what would fill a pickup truck bed at no charge. All additional amounts picked up will be at a charge of $25/load. Payments for extra loads must be received in advance.

Limbs to be picked up cannot be longer than ten (10) feet in length or larger than two (2) inches in diameter. Limbs must be of a size that one (1) man can handle them. The City does not pick up stumps, tree trunks, tree tops, mattresses, appliances, carpeting or padding, building materials, plumbing fixtures, sofas, chairs, grills, tires, brick or concrete. These items can be disposed of at the local landfill (Three Corners’ Regional Landfill – (256) 447-1881 or The Gadsden Transfer Station (256-549-4745).

Debris left by tree surgeons, pulpwood cutters, landscape companies, roofers, construction workers, etc. will not be picked up. These items are the responsibility of the companies or homeowners. (The companies are also required to obtain a City business license and applicable permits.)
